Is Budva a Good Holiday Destination?

If you’re looking for an exciting new vacation spot, you may have come across the coastal town of Budva in Montenegro. As someone who grew up in Budva, I wanted to share my thoughts on whether Budva is a good option for your next holiday.

So, in this article, you will find out if is Budva a good holiday destination for you and your family.

Where is Budva Located?

First, let’s talk about the location. Budva is situated on the Adriatic coast of Montenegro, with beautiful beaches right along the water.

It’s about a 3-hour drive from the capital city of Podgorica or a short 25-minute drive from the popular port town of Kotor

The main draw is the stunning coastline, offering incredible vistas and azure waters perfect for swimming and sunbathing.

When is the Best Time to Visit Budva?

In my experience, Budva shines as a holiday destination in the summer months between June and August. During this peak season, temperatures average in the mid-80s Fahrenheit, perfect for spending long days relaxing on the beach and enjoying water sports.

The sea is warm and calm, with minimal waves or currents, making it ideal for families with kids.

Is Budva a Good Holiday Destination for Families?

Speaking of families, Budva caters very well to vacationers of all ages and families. Along the lively promenade, you’ll find everything from fine dining to grab-and-go ice cream shops, with amusements like mini golf and small aquariums to keep the young ones entertained.

The Old Town offers quaint cobblestone streets to explore, with cafes, shops, and historic churches.

Activities and Attractions in Budva

While the beaches may be the main highlight, there’s also no shortage of activities and attractions around Budva. The 14th-century fortifications above the Old Town provide scenic views of the coastline. Nearby Kotor makes for an easy day trip to see medieval architecture and historic sights.

There are opportunities for hiking, water sports, paragliding, boat tours and even visiting nearby wineries. So relaxation or adventure, Budva has it all!

Accommodation and Budget Options in Budva

Now let’s talk about accommodations and budget. Fortunately, Budva has developed a thriving tourism industry, so there are ample lodging options at various price points.

Large resort-style hotels offer convenience right near the beaches, while private apartment rentals allow you to live like a local. There are also modern hostels and glamping sites for easy-going travelers.

While peak summer rates are higher, visiting in late May or early June can mean great deals on hotels. Opting for apartments or Booking.com over luxury hotels can also help you visit Budva on a budget.

Once in town, dining and activities are quite affordable, especially if you avoid the overly touristy areas. All in all, I’d say Budva can cater to a wide range of vacation budgets.

Potential Downsides to Visiting Budva

No destination is perfect though, so what are the downsides? Well, during the summer months, Budva gets very crowded and noisy. The Old Town streets and beaches fill up fast, so things can feel congested and chaotic at times. If you’re looking for a quiet or secluded getaway, I’d suggest visiting in the shoulder season instead.

Transportation into and around Budva is a real mess. Using the local bus system took some adjustment, and pedestrian traffic makes driving difficult. Just budget extra time getting around, or consider hiring private transfers for convenience.

The Verdict: Is Budva Worth Visiting?

So in summary – is Budva worth a visit? In my opinion, absolutely! For travelers who enjoy lively beach towns, water sports, scenic views, and history, Budva is a perfect Mediterranean destination. The prime summer weather and range of amenities make it ideal for families, couples, and solo travelers alike.

While the crowds can be an annoyance, they’re easy to avoid by going early/late season or escaping to nearby towns like Kotor.

To experience the best of the Montenegrin Riviera with reasonable prices, stunning beaches, and fun attractions, I wholeheartedly recommend Budva for your next sunny European holiday!

It met my expectations as an affordable destination with great weather, food, sights, and photo ops around every corner. I had an amazing time, and I believe you will too in this little slice of paradise on the Adriatic Sea.
